Fitting time to relax into your working day can be tricky, so here's something you can try at your desk.
Mix a couple of drops of essential oil with a ‘carrier’ oil such as coconut, almond or olive oil, then apply it to your skin. Or keep a scent packet or sachet on your desk, and smell it whenever you feel tense.
Research suggests that the scent of some essential oils can help you to relax. Lavender oil is often used for sleep, but research shows this calming scent may also help people perform better under stress. Another study found that spraying lavender oil on clothes could reduce work-related stress for 3 to 4 days.
Other scents you can try include bergamot, lemongrass, neroli, yuzu and orange. You can buy them as pure oils, in a diffuser, in candles or scent packets. Always check the labels of essential oils and follow the instructions for use.
