Starting the day with a smoothie? Add one of these little helpers to pack even more of a nutritious punch.

Known for its iron content (which helps energy levels), spinach also contains fibre, folate, calcium and vitamins A and K – making it high in antioxidants. Spinach is also rich in beta-carotene, which the body turns into vitamin A. Add a handful of fresh spinach to boost your smoothie.

With potassium, fibre, vitamin C and natural sugars, banana adds a hit of sweetness – but unlike sweets and chocolate, actually does increase long-term energy. Bananas have more vitamin A, iron and phosphorus than apples and provide more energy than a sports drink. Add ripe slices to your smoothie.

A type of algae, spirulina is packed with good stuff, including vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B3 (niacin), plus vitamin A, vitamin K, folate, protein, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. It’s also been proven to boost the metabolic system, which can make us feel more energised. Sprinkle away.
