A quick way to unwind… without reaching for a drink
Thursday, 17 December · 2 min read

It’s no secret that the festive season can be a stressful time. But with a pandemic to contend with this year, you may be feeling a new level of stress right now.

A quick drink may seem like an easy way to unwind, but alcohol can actually make you feel more stressed.

So, what else can you do to feel better quickly?

It may not sound quite as pleasant as having a cocktail, but there’s a simple breathing technique that can have a big effect on your mood. Humming bee breath, also known as bhramari, can help you calm down quickly, relieve tension, and make you feel less frustrated, angry or anxious.

Here’s how to do it.

  1. Find somewhere quiet and safe to sit. Close your eyes.
  2. Try to let go of any tension in your body.
  3. Place a couple of fingers inside both of your ears on the small triangular part of your ear attached to your face.
  4. Breathe in and out slowly and deeply.
  5. As you breathe out, gently press on this part of your ear with your fingers.
  6. Make a humming noise with your mouth closed.
  7. Repeat until you feel more relaxed.

And that’s it. You now have a simple trick to turn to if stress kicks in.

Quote of the day

As you breathe in, cherish yourself. As you breathe out, cherish all beings.
