Mornings can be challenging, but there are things you can do to improve your mood and set yourself up for a productive day.
If you’re tired of feeling lethargic and slow, here are 4 ways to kick start your mornings.
1. Drink a glass of water
The American Heart Association recommends that you get into the habit of drinking a glass of water as soon as you wake up.
It says that it’s a good way to make sure that your body is getting enough water and an effective way to prevent dehydration, which can cause headaches and fatigue.
2. Eat a high-protein breakfast
Breakfast is an opportunity to fuel and nourish your body — giving you the energy to concentrate on the day ahead. But it’s important to include some protein.
According to the American Society for Nutrition, protein will keep you feeling fuller for longer and prevent your blood sugar from spiking. Try adding yoghurt to your muesli, or eating eggs with your toast.
3. Do 5 to 10 minutes of exercise
Exercise can boost your mood and make you feel more alert.
If you wake up feeling tired and lethargic, organisations like the UK's National Health Service (NHS) recommend a 5-minute workout to start your day.
Try doing some simple stretches and rotations while you're lying on your bed. Or do some squats and overhead stretches while standing on your bedroom floor.
4. Take a few minutes for yourself
Mornings can be busy, but it’s important to take a few minutes for yourself.
Try taking a few breaths and thinking about something you're grateful for, or setting a priority for the day.
