Try this New Year’s resolution idea to boost your mental health
Friday, 1 January · 1 min read

As you say goodbye to 2020, why not make a New Year’s resolution that will help you feel better? Research shows that learning a new skill can improve your mental wellbeing. It works by:

  • improving self-esteem
  • giving you a sense of purpose
  • helping you to connect with others (even if it is remotely)

Choose something that you’ll enjoy – ideas include painting, sculpture, chess, learning a new language, or making furniture or clothes. Alternatively, consider volunteering. There are lots of different opportunities available, and you’ll get the bonus of helping others, too.

Quote of the day

Learning a new skill can change hundreds of millions of cortical connections [connections in the brain].

Michael Merzenich, neuroscientist
