If your exercise regime has taken a knock in recent months and you’re lacking the motivation to get back on track, it’s worth remembering the wide range of benefits it brings.

Staying active isn't just about losing weight or toning up. It can also improve your mental health and reduce your risk of multiple diseases.

The physical benefits include:

  • improving your sleep -- which can also help your mental focus during the day
  • reducing your risk of some cancers (including breast and lung cancer)
  • reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, a stroke and high blood pressure
  • building strong muscles, bones and joints -- lowering your risk of osteoporosis later in life
  • keeping your heart and lungs healthy

Exercise also improves your mental health by:

  • easing stress and tension
  • improving your mood and self-esteem
  • lowering your risk of developing anxiety or depression

So how much exercise should you do? The UK’s National Health Service recommends adults do a minimum of 150 minutes of exercise every week.

Try to combine different types of activities to make sure you’re using all your muscles, and spread your exercise sessions across the week.
