Can exercise help with chronic pain?

The main treatment for chronic or persistent pain used to be rest and no exercise. But it's now believed that this approach doesn't help.

In fact, regular exercise can help to relieve a range of chronic pain conditions because it can improve:

  • flexibility
  • your range of movement
  • joint stability
  • muscle strength

It can also reduce inflammation, further easing pain.

By contrast, a lack of exercise can lead to stiff joints and weaker bones and muscles.

So, if you have chronic pain, whether it's from a condition like osteoarthritis or ongoing pain in your back, it’s important to keep moving.

But you should speak to a doctor before starting a new exercise routine to make sure the activities you choose help to ease your pain and don’t make it worse.
